Titus Maccius Plautus oli roomalainen näytelmäkirjailija. Häntä pidetään Terentiuksen ohella roomalaisen kirjallisuuden huomattavimpana komedioiden kirjoittajana ja attikalaisen komedian muokkaajana roomalaiseen muotoon. Roomalaisten makutottumukset komedioissa olivat huomattavasti karkeammat kuin kreikkalaisten. Kaikkiaan Plautuksen arvellaan kirjoittaneen 130 näytelmää, joista 21 on säilynyt nykyaikaan saakka.

Plautus is a truly popular dramatist, whose comic effect springs from exaggeration, burlesque and often coarse humour, rapid action, and a deliberately upside-down portrayal of life, in which slaves give orders to their masters, parents are hoodwinked to the advantage of sons who need money for girls, and the procurer or braggart soldier is outwitted and fails to secure the seduction or possession of the desired girls. Titus Maccius Plautus, better known simply as Plautus (actually a nickname meaning 'flatfoot'), was, between c. 205 and 184 BCE, a Roman writer of comedy plays, specifically the fabulae palliatae, which had a Greek -themed storyline. Plautus (ca. 254-ca. 184 B.C.) was a Roman writer. His theatrical genius, vitality, farcical humor, and control of the Latin language rank him as Rome's greatest comic playwright.
